Le Grand (Petit) Étang

So the Wednesday before last Olivier once again played tour guide to the language assistants and took David, Ellen and I to the biggest lake on the island! Only 1 problem: Reunion is currently experiencing its driest year for about half a century which means that the ‘grand’ étang was rather petit.
It was still a really nice day though, the weather was actually a bit cool for once and we went for a stroll around the lake and weirdly walked on the dried up floor which was all cracked like an African desert. After this we decided to go and see the nearby waterfalls which were lovely, as waterfalls always are, but much smaller than normal Olivier said. It was wonderfully peaceful there and it was good to escape the urban ugliness of St Benoit to sit surrounded by the forests and just appreciate the beauty of nature. I like this island, I’m very happy here and I will definitely be re-visiting the lake to try and see it at its fullest!
